Yes. The hood zips off completely, so Macaron works as a covered burrow bed or an open, round bed. Try it off on warm days or while your dog gets used to the bed, then zip it back on when he wants to burrow.

The edge is 6 inches high and soft, so it gives a little under small paws as they hop in. Inside, the floor sits 3 inches up. For Dachshunds and other short-legged dogs, 6 inches is close to shoulder height. If your dog has a back or joint condition, ask your vet whether a bed this height suits him.

No. Macaron uses soft foam made for a light, small body. Firm orthopedic foam is built for big dogs whose weight presses a bed flat, and it can feel too firm for a small dog. For a large or senior dog, see the ZNOOZ Orthopedic Bed.

The cover unzips and goes in the washing machine on a cold or warm cycle. Tumble dry it on low or let it air dry, and don't machine wash the foam. The cover is water-repellent, so spills and damp paws bead up and wipe off. It isn't waterproof, though. If your dog is still house training, put a washable pad inside.
